C. M. McCABE BUTCHERS - our meat supplier's story

Christopher McCabe is a local butcher, based in Totnes for over 30 years. Christopher carefully selects his quality meat from local, traditional, small, non-intensive farms. His team have visited the farms in person to check welfare standards and traceability. The animals are reared on natural, wholesome diets, which do not contain recycled animal waste, harmful additives or growth promotors.
The main farms supplying McCabe’s are:
Hemsbrook Farm, Littlehempston - beef and lamb
Yonder Park Farm, Blackawton - pork and bacon
Creedy Carver Ltd, Merrifield Farm, Crediton - for free range chicken.
He also regularly stocks game and venison, which are all obtained from a local supplier.
Christopher buys the animals direct from the farmer, who then deliver them to Gages Farm abattoir, Ashburton, where they are dispatched. This is a small ‘craft’ abattoir. Animals travel no more than 10 miles which is better for the animal and in addition keeps ‘food miles’ low. The whole carcass is then delivered to the butchers after maturing, where it is prepared by his skilled team of butchers.
Broadhempston Community Shop sells McCabe’s meat for the same price as his shop in Totnes; indeed the meat is supplied with their labels on! Although we don’t carry the full range of his stock, we are happy to take orders. Christopher tells me if he has it in his shop, he can package it and send it to us. This means our customers benefit from being able to buy good quality, local meat from this reputable butcher, without wasting time travelling into town or the associated fuel and parking costs.
McCabe's deliver to the shop on Tuesday and Friday. Orders need to be placed by Monday and Thursday before 1:00pm to prevent disappointment.
